Mintal and Topsoe sign Landmark Agreement for China’s First Dynamic Green Ammonia Production Facility
Mintal Hydrogen Energy Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Mintal”) has long been dedicated to driving China's green energy transition and achieving its carbon neutrality goals. In February 2023, at the Danish Embassy in China, Mintal entered into a strategic cooperation agreement with Topsoe, a global leader in carbon reduction technologies. Under this agreement, Topsoe will provide technical expertise and support for Mintal’s newly-established industrial-scale fully dynamic green ammonia production plant in Baotou, Inner Mongolia—the first of its kind in China. This groundbreaking project not only marks a significant milestone for Mintal in the green energy field, but also injects new momentum into China's ongoing energy transition and carbon reduction efforts.
Project highlights
Capacity and Timeline: The first phase of the project has a production capacity of 1800 tons per day, with the facility set to commence operations in 2027.
Environmental benefits: Once operational, the green ammonia plant will replace approximately 850,000 tons of standard coal equivalent each year; thus reducing 2 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions and significantly contributing to a cleaner environment.
Technological Innovation: Topsoe will provide the project with a cutting-edge fully dynamic synthetic ammonia technology license, along with a complete process design package, proprietary equipment, and catalyst products to ensure optimal production efficiency.
Technical advantage: Topsoe’s dynamic ammonia synthesis technology is designed to accommodate inherent intermittency in wind turbines power output, ensuring stable production and high efficiency even under varying wind conditions. By directly connecting renewable electricity from wind turbines to electrolyzer units, the plant’s design offers a more cost-effective solution compared to hydrogen storage systems, enabling efficient conversion of renewable energy into green chemicals.
The General Manager of Mintal, the Danish Ambassador to China Mr. Thomas Østrup Moller and the Vice President of China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation Mr. Fu Xiangsheng attended the signing ceremony.
Quote form Fu Xiaolong, General Manager of Mintal, "We are pleased to partner with Topsoe, a recognized leader in mature ammonia synthesis and carbon reduction technologies. Our new industrial-scale green ammonia production plant represents a significant breakthrough in China’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality in fuels and chemicals production industries. We hope to support China's green energy transition and economic development through this milestone project."
Yang Dajun, President of Topsoe China, said, "We are delighted to be part of this impressive project of Mintal. With our expertise and state-of-the-art equipment, we look forward to providing comprehensive support to our client. Our role as the technology supplier for this groundbreaking project fully demonstrates our ability to provide the most advanced technological solutions for Chinese customers and contribute to China's energy transition and carbon reduction goals."
Through this project, Mintal reaffirms its commitment to advancing the development and application of green energy technologies. We are proud to contribute to sustainable development in China and globally. We believe that through close collaboration with Topsoe, we will jointly create a new chapter in green energy and take a solid step towards achieving carbon neutrality goals.
